WednesdaySession 4.1: Digital Security Strategies
This session framed digital security as central to CSO survival, where the loss of donor lists, project files, or sensitive evidence could cripple whole campaigns. Drawing on cases of cyber-espionage, newsroom raids, and state surveillance, participants explored how risks come not only from hackers but also from accidents and insider leaks. Practical strategies like mapping “crown jewels,” classifying data, limiting exposure, and maintaining strong everyday habits were highlighted as more effective than buying tools. A crisis simulation on handling corruption evidence showed the need to balance digital safeguards with physical transfers, legal risks, and alliances with media. The core message: digital security is not a checklist but a culture of prevention and resilience, built on vigilance, “zero trust,” and protecting people as much as information.

FridayDRAPAC Series: Human Rights Responsibilities and Challenges for Tech Companies Operating in Authoritarian Countries
Across the Asia region, an explosion in internet use in recent decades has coincided with a rise in authoritarianism in several countries. Many global tech companies have enthusiastically pursued users in Asian markets, often without careful assessment of the human rights challenges involved when operating under authoritarian regimes. In some countries, tech companies face legal and policy demands to cooperate directly in human rights abuses.

FridaySession 1: Mapping the Landscape of Tech Abuse in Malaysia
This session focused on identifying and analysing technology-facilitated abuse ahead of the upcoming election. Participants examined forms of abuse (state tech abuse, radicalisation, child sexual exploitation and anti-rights sentiments), key perpetrators (state and non-state actors), and tactics (doxxing, propaganda, identity theft). They discussed enablers like tech platforms and emerging technologies, the victims (marginalised groups, human rights defenders), and contributing factors (digital literacy, regulation, socioeconomic issues). The session included a group exercise to map tech abuse threats and assess their social, political, and economic impacts, resulting in a comprehensive threat assessment.
